What are the main benefits of getting involved with a clinical trial?

You may not be aware but September is World Alzheimer’s Month. This is an international campaign which has been running for 6 years, designed to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. This year’s theme is ‘Remember Me’ to highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia. World Alzheimer’s Day is on 21 Sep.

Glasgow Memory Clinic is an independent clinical centre who seek volunteers for a range of different studies. Those who take part in dementia research are contributing towards the care and treatment of people who have dementia and the people that may develop dementia in the future.

Below are some of the benefits of taking part in a clinical trial with Glasgow Memory Clinic. You would be:

  • Taking a proactive step towards helping yourself and others with dementia
  • Potentially gaining access to new treatments that are often not found outside the clinical trial
  • Getting the opportunity to play an active role in your own healthcare
  • Contributing to the Alzheimer’s research today to help the future generations of tomorrow

Taking part in a clinical trial is completely voluntary and it’s up to you if you decide to participate. It’s generally accepted that people who participate in clinical trials have better overall outcomes. The reasons for this are thought to be the extensive tests, medical care and attention received when taking part in a clinical trial.

There is no charge for attending Glasgow Memory Clinic and all medical care, tests and treatment is completely free of charge.  We also offer free parking, Wi-Fi and refreshments and your travel expenses would be covered if you are screened.

Every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia. You could do your bit to help support Alzheimer’s research by volunteering for one of our current trials. Everyone has different reasons for participating in a clinical trial, whether it be for your own health, or because someone you know has dementia or it could just be out of curiosity. Whatever the reason, the people who participate in clinical trials are vital to improving medical care.

We are currently seeking:

  • Healthy volunteers aged 60 – 85 years
  • Volunteers who have noticed a decline in their memory in the last 12 months aged 50 – 85 years
  • Volunteers who have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s aged 50 – 85 years

All volunteers require a reliable person who knows how you are managing with daily activities, that can attend study visits with you.

Please note if you are screened for a study you can be eligible to receive a £25 payment that recognises your time and inconvenience in addition to any travel expenses due.

Did you know most of us have benefitted in some way from medical research?

Most of us will have in some way benefited from research without necessarily realising it. For example, by taking medical drugs, benefiting from the use of certain equipment, being treated in a certain way or being in certain environment. This is all because these treatments or medications have been tested, refined, approved and then made available to the general public.
